Extremely Disappointing Stay – Worst Airbnb Experience in 10 Years
As 5-star rated Airbnb guests, we’ve never felt the need to complain until now. Our recent stay was shocking. We were offered a full £170 refund by Airbnb after submitting evidence, with no dispute.
Upon arrival at 9:30 PM for a quick overnight stay, it was clear the property hadn’t been cleaned properly, possibly for multiple guests.
• Dirty Surfaces: Crumbs and residue on the coffee and dining tables.
• Unhygienic Kitchen: Used coffee pods left in the machine and a filthy sink.
• Dirty Sofa: Dust and dirt on the cushions, with more filth underneath.
• Unkempt Bedroom: Cobwebs, an unvacuumed floor, and poorly arranged, uncomfortable single mattresses.
• Filthy Bathroom: Slime in the grout and pubic hair on the tiles.
I would write more but I don’t have enough space left !
After a 7-hour drive, we couldn’t even relax. We had no choice but to leave early. This was by far the worst Airbnb experience ever.

Good location. Dog friendly accomodation. Apartment had everything needed for a weekend break and plenty got tea, coffee and milk. Other reviews stated uncomfortable bed and noise from room above but we didn't experience this.
Had to pay an extra £20 insurance which we didn't know about until after payment had been taken for the apartment. Strange smell in the bedroom. Only half a toilet roll for the whole weekend. Stain on sofa and mould in shower.

The location of the property was close to everything.
The main description was wrong on the original booking as it said parking and there wasn't any.
The shower and bedroom carpet had not been cleaned.
There was also what looked to be sanitary towels still in the bathroom bin from the previous people.
Also, the room just smelt damp from the moment we entered.
Also, the fact that Host and Stay push for a deposit to cover incase of accidental damage. which, for me, should be included in the price of the property.
I would not recommend this company.
I'm not usually one to complain, too. But this was my worst stay with booking.com

Note: there is a compulsory damage deposit hidden in the small print. Airbnb reimbursed me for ours because - as I understood it - it’s against Airbnb policy for hosts to ask for additional payments separate to the listing.
The location was very good, central, easy to walk around and the flat itself was nice - though we thought it was a bit damp smelling at first.
It wasn’t easy to park in front of the entrance, which was located down a tiny alley between two shops, with only small spaces to park on temporarily (had to park a walk away from the flat for the duration using parking passes).
The bed was pretty uncomfortable too, could have done with a new mattress. But despite the quibbles, the location and decor made up for it. Stylish flat well kitted out and surrounded by the bustle of the town - but surprisingly quiet in the evenings. All in all would consider coming again.

Amazingly well appointed property, with fridge, dishwasher, oven, microwave, washing machine, coffee maker, good sized sofa and great shower room. Right in the centre of whitby so once parked up you don't need the car until you leave.
Difficult to find, we found it by accident, needs signage outside the gate to the alleyway. Carpet in the bedroom needs cleaned or replaced as does the mattress in the bedroom. The biggest issue is with sound proofing from the property above, you can hear them stomping about. No parking near the property, but can park within 15 mins walk.

Nice large space
Took too long to get key code for door. Was left waiting to check in for hrs. Had to pay extra damage insurance b4 code for door was given. This should be included in price. One payment not extra hidden payment unexplained untill payed for room and then cant get in room until paying for extras. Totally unaxeptable.left waiting to access room for hrs. Bad .

Really bad experience here. There was black mould on the windows and on the shower head. Dog hairs in the bed and the duvet was ripped. The fridge was dirty and had old food stains. There was a used contact lens left in the bedside draw. There was stains on the carpet and wall. Clearly had not being cleaned in a long time. Messaged the host and they didn’t reply until I had checked out and asked if I want it to be cleaned again!

The location was good
The sofa was covered in dog hair, the floor was dirty, and there were crumbs on the coffee table. The hoover smelled of dog, the mop bucket in the cupboard left a stagnant water smell in the whole place. We had to open the door, only 2 windows could open. Had to buy air fresheners and sit on throws from the car because of the amount of dog hair on the sofa, and the horrible smell from the hoover and bucket. There was lots of noise from the above apartment.

The flat was well located in the town centre, although took me a couple of minutes to locate it initially.
The place was lovely and well maintained, coffee and milk were a welcome extra.
Couple of very minor points that weren't worth flagging at the time, but took some points away.
- The wifi wasn't working although connecting it wouldn't link to the Internet despite resetting the router.
- The freezer needs defrosting. On our 2nd night we picked up some Ice cream from the local co-op and found out the freezer was almost a solid block of frost and ice.
Despite these small drawbacks (both of which are very quick fixes) we loved the flat and would look to use it again in the future.

Modern and well equipped the apartment has pretty much everything you need. Location is central so great for accessing the town centre and while it’s very close to the pub we didn’t experience much noise at all.
I’d read previous reviews and hoped some of the issues might have been addressed but unfortunately not. The apartment wasn’t very clean. Bedroom carpet covered in grass, hair and fluff - obviously hasn’t been hoovered before we arrived. There was lots of hair on the bathroom floor and sticky spots on the wooden floor in the living area!! All basics that really should have been right. The noise from the upstairs apartment is really loud. Clearly the people staying there were just walking around but it sounded like a baby elephant was upstairs. And finally the bed. Not the worst I’ve slept in but it’s old and had its day. Needs replacing really!! If these things were addressed I’d stay again. Otherwise it’d be a no!

We liked the proximity of the town with its shops, pubs and eateries. The apartment is modern and comfortable. The size of the apartment is just right for two.
The bed mattress was not very comfy resulting in restless nights for us.
Unfortunately the expelair in the bathroom was not working so the condensation took a long time to

We had a great time, the accommodation was beautiful just like the photos. The only thing that was disappointing was the bed. It was extremely uncomfortable. The owner of the property had pushed two single beds together to make a double and they were not the best mattresses at all.
However, this would not put us off from booking again. As long as they can confirm, I have changed the mattresses, At least we can have a comfortable night sleep.

Breakfast was not included however there was plenty of places to eat nearby with cafe's and restaurants. The location of the apartment was close to the centre about a 5/6 min walk and the residents were very friendly.
the beds in the apartment were a little uncomfortable with a fixed depth on each of the side of the bed probably there through age of the mattress. The room was clean and with plenty of space for my dog to relax and lie in his bed.

Apartment was actually furnished well but it was very unclean.
I am writing today to complain about our stay at Staffordhsire Getaway.
Firstly, when we arrived inside the property we noticed the level of cleanliness was very poor. There was dog hairs on the sofa/floor, food left in the sink, stains on cushions, fingerprints on cupboards and you could see the floor hadn't been mopped. Also, on the website it claims they have added a 'luxury coffee machine so you can enjoy a delicious coffee each morning' well there were no coffee pods to be found so felt disappointed that these were not replaced. The website also claims 'you'll find a luxury space in the bedroom, you'll enjoy your nights sleep, king size bed boasts premium bedding'. There is nothing premium about two single beds pushed together with the most uncomfortable spring mattress'. The fact we had to pay a security deposit to be able to stay in this place is absurd as the standards were so LOW.
Secondly, we didn't actually manage to stay the night, we had to sleep in the car with our dog, due the flat above. The walls are not very sound proof, we could hear a bunch of men stumble upstairs in the early hours of the morning, and continued to shout, move furniture until 3am, which we then felt forced to sleep in the car. Due to the noise they made, it made our dog very anxious and on edge, and he would bark at them making noises, so then the people above would give us verbal abuse, swearing, calling us names, making us feel extremely unsafe and vulnerable. We know this is not directly the hosts fault, but online this is labelled as a 'relaxing stay' and it was instead, quite traumatising. We would like a full refund for our stay as we did not actually 'stay' here, we had to leave in the early hours to our car on the road which felt safer than the flat as we felt so scared.

The location of the flat is very central, right in the centre of town. It could be a little noisy at times, but nothing to worry about. The communication was excellent, and the layout of the place was really good
As others have mentioned, we found the bed really uncomfortable.
We also had trouble with opening the windows for air, which might have contributed to a little surface mould on the bedroom window sill.

The apartment was lovely. The location was great too!
Unfortunately, I thought that the mattress on the bed was very, very uncomfortable. We felt every spring, so we didn't get much sleep. I would expect a quality mattress at the price we paid, not a mattress that felt cheap. A shame really, as the pillows and bedding were of a high quality .

Smack bang in the centre of Whitby, so a good location for exploring. Had everything we needed. Clean, fresh and modern (although fridge door shelves need a wipe).
THE BED. So, so uncomfortable. Mattress is thin, you can feel the springs and you can see it bowing in the middle. No mattress topper - yuk. Also, in summer it’s too warm for a thick duvet. I used my part of the duvet as a mattress topper (which didn’t really help) and bought a sheet for cover. Maybe have some spare sheets for people who would prefer a choice. I would stay at the property again but only when the bed was changed. Not very soundproofed so could hear upstairs neighbours.
Brian

The property was very modern except for the bed which has springs poking out of it. The access is unsuitable for people of a certain age or with walking issues. However they do not mention that on the web site.
Also parking is a very serious problem.

Fantastic location, clean tidy well presented
Bed mattress very poor quality would say it’s actually collapsed one side and is not up to standard, Internet constantly dropping in and out, couple of things require money to be spent on the property.

For a place that you HAVE to pay a security deposit or waiver to be able to stay in this does NOT live up to standards. Firstly, the wifi didnt work, therefore the TV didnt work as it only had access to streaming services. The checkout time is contradictory, some places it says 10am but in the flat itself there was a frame that had a friendly reminder in that said "Midday". As well as this when things break in the flat you would expect them to get replaced, having had to pay a deposit etc. However, someone had clearly broken the cafetiere in a previous visit so it was not available to us, although the plunger for it was. There was however a nespresso coffee machine in the kitchen, great! No cafetiere but a nespresso machine, but no pods left so also unusable. The bed, probably the most uncomfortable bed I had ever slept in and barely got any sleep for the 3 nights we were there. There were also yellow stains on the linen on the bed...all in all, pretty underwhelmed.

Great location right in the centre. Despite being just off a busy shopping street the property is tucked away around the back making it nice and quiet. Close to lots of nice shops and cafes. Location was excellent.
Accommodation was lovely but we had to pay a £250.00 Damage Deposit (subject to a £10.00 administration charge) or, to purchase an Accidental Damage Waiver for £25.00 which would cover us for up to £500.00 of accidental damage during our stay. This was not mentioned in the information prior to booking and we would not have booked and paid for it had all of this information been available when making the choice to book.
Communication was poor- had one email the day we arrived asking us to vacate the property the sunday by 10.00, then another email the next day asking us to vacate by 12.00 and then the day of departure another email by 10.00- very confussing.

I don't feel it was worth the price.
- The bed was incredibly uncomfortable, you could feel the springs. We barely slept, which is no great when you're on holidays.
- The bedroom absolutely stank of cat litter. No matter how much we aired the place, we could smell it from the moment we arrived until the moment we left.
- When you pay £50 cleaning fee for staying 2 days, you expect a spotless clean flat (especially when it's a small 1 bedroom flat). We had spider webs all over our head on the bedroom, there were a few more in the living room/kitchen. The blinds were covered in dust and the settee is on high feet there was dog food all under, our dogs kept on trying to get it.
- The parking scratch park is useless because it's only in a small zone and it's completely full.
On the positive, the flat is very nicely furnished and you have everything you need. It's in the centre, you can walk anywhere.
The bathroom is incredible, the settee very comfortable, instructions very clear.

Perfect for a couple who want to be in the heart of Whitby and use as a base. It was very clean, modern and comfortable. Whilst it doesn’t have any views and not really a place where you would sit outside and drink/eat, it really is idea to use as a base. It’s opposite the Angel pub (but up an alley so no noise) which was great on Friday night with a live band playing. We will stay here again. Thank you. Steve

The property was very clean and had all the facilities required. The location was excellent being close to shops and the harbour.
The matress(s) were very hard and quite uncomfortable.
I suggest that the property owners should replace the matress(s) as they attract nearly all of the negative reviews of the property (it might get to the point that guests, on seeing previous reviews will not book this property for that reason).
In addition it might be beneficial to install a handrail next to the steps approaching the property as these are quite steep and very uneven.

Great little place with everything we needed for an overnight stay. Could have easily stayed a few days here. Location was super Central, 10 mins walk to the beach and about the same up to the Abbey.

Absolutely fantastic little apartment in the centre of Whitby. Spotlessly clean and well equipped. The location is great for exploring the town and close to shops and pubs etc. I will definitely be booking to stay again soon.

Good location and well finished
Microwave didn't work, tv aerial had no reception, when you arrive you have to write your car registration on the parking permit but there is no pen. That was nothing compared to when I went to my car on the final day to go home I found it had been bumped into an vandalised, it was covered in scratches where someone had dragged something over it and the back bumper had blue paint marks and gouges down the side. This isn't the property owners fault but if you have an expensive car and plan on staying here just warning you. It's going to cost close to £1000 to get my car paint back to the standard it was.

location, all mod cons. quiet and peaceful at night as tucked away from all the hustle and bustle.
parking near by can be a pain. the smoke alarms are far too sensitive.

We stayed here with our puppy and we all had a lovely time. The location was excellent, within minutes' walking distance to main attractions and waterfront. Beautiful surroundings down a pretty alleyway and courtyard. Lots of amenities and everything you need close by. Spotlessly clean, very well equipped and some milk left in the fridge which was very much appreciated after a long journey. Hosts are very quick to respond and sort any queries or issues.
Worth noting that the bed is very firm and made up of two single beds, which may be uncomfortable for some.
Overall a wonderful and enjoyable stay

Ideal location, comfortable apartment.
Sound proofing regarding flat above was not good - footsteps were very loud, and you could hear the person above snoring!
Constant email chasing regarding verification of details was also annoying- this was completed very early on but I continued to receive chasers right up until the day before our arrival. This was despite having phoned on 3 occasions too!

Excellent location! It was really clean and the decor is modern. There are some smalls steps up to it but not an issue for us. We had to park around a 2 minute walk away but I think this would be the same with most other places to stay in Whitby. If I went back to Whitby I would definitely chose this apartment again.

Nice and modern.

No batteries in TV remote on arrival, didn’t arrive until 1900hrs on a Friday night when all the nearby shops were closed, Host & Stay advised I went out and bought some 👎🏻

The location was ideal in the centre of town. The hideaway was spotless with everything you could require during your stay.
Parking was not easy but there is a car park just round the corner if no zone spaces available.

Beautiful modern property, very clean, everything you need.
the bed was very hard and you could feel every spring, the noise from upstairs you could even hear them talking stomping about at 5 in the morning, didn’t get much sleep.

Great place. Location was amazing the only slight issue was finding a parking space was really hard but we did go in the school holidays. One thing to note is that the bed isn’t actually a double bed and is two single mattresses together which might bother some people. We still had a good enough sleep.

Brilliant location of Staffordshire Hideaway apartment. Clean and all the amenities that you require for your stay. The parking in the W Zones was effortless and just round the corner. Basically a lovely place to stay and near to everything for Whitby.

We have been to Whitby 4 times now and love the area, but this little appartment is not value for money, in fact we felt ripped off. We ended up going home 3 days early as was so noisy and we got no sleep. We could hear every step upstairs and the quests above had a dog which barked for long periods of time. The flat appears newly refurbished and is very clean and when we booked this earlier in the year there was only 1 review available. We can see that since then other guests have mentioned the noise as well. Though the flat is nicely done up you feel like it is in a basement as the windows have no view and most are at the level of the ground. Parking was difficult, though a prepaid parking card was provided by the owners all the W zones and free zones were full all day, so if you are going at a busy time of the year, be prepared not to use your car much.

Apartment was modern and clean. Hosts had great communication prior to stay.
Small set of stairs at the entrance that was ok to carry a pram up but wouldn’t be wheelchair accessible.
Just what we were after for our stay in Whitby, would stay here again.

The accomodation is stunning. Well kitted out with stylish decoration and lovely furniture however, the noise from the upstairs apartment was at times unbelievably loud. Resulted in early mornings as you woke up when they woke up and then distracting through the day. Don't know if it's floor boards or lack of insulation so need to be aware and prepared.

Lovely little hideaway right in Whitby centre.
Everything as expected and the little outside space was a real sun trap - a treat in the morning.
Have stayed in more personal Airbnb places but this was clean and comfortable.

Perfect little hideaway for a weekend away. Whilst it was tucked away and quaint, it felt spacious inside which makes a pleasant change from cramped properties. Very easy check in and messages explained everything thoroughly. I’d happily stay again!

Great, modern, clean apartment in a fantastic location in Whitby. Everything is within walking distance from the apartment and it’s a great place to return to after a long day walking on the Moors or on the beach!

The place is Immaculately decorated and very well appointed with high quality appliances.
The problem with the property is that it feels that there has been no soundproofing between the apartment and the upstairs accommodation. We are assuming that has hardwood floors. Children running and jumping and furniture moving - all in a normal way I’m sure - was incredibly noisy when you are sitting downstairs in the place we rented.
